Learning What Can’t Be Taught
Six artists explore the evolution of art education in China
Asia Art Archive, 11/F Hollywood Centre, 233 Hollywood Road, Sheung Wan, Hong Kong
“Learning What Can’t Be Taught” explores the evolution of art education in China from the 1950s to the 2000s through works by six Chinese artists from different generations. Rarely seen before artworks, archival materials, and interviews investigate differences and points of continuity among these creative talents.
They were all each other’s teachers and students at the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts in Hangzhou – now known as China Academy of Art – established in 1920. It was the first art academy in the country, renowned for the number of graduates who became leading artists in the landmark Avant-Garde Movement of 1985 and 1986, which emerged after the Cultural Revolution.
