Mikhail Karikis: No Ordinary Protest
No Ordinary Protest is a new commissioned project by the Greek-British artist Mikhail Karikis, who draws inspiration from a children’s science fiction novel titled “The Iron Woman” (1993), an ecofeminist parable in which collective listening and noise-making become tools to transform the world.
The artist, always used to work across various media such as sound, film and performance, worked to the film with a group of seven-year-olds from Mayflower Primary School in East London. The result is a video which reflects upon the environmental themes of the book; the children involved debate upon these topics and face them improvising and experimenting with vocalisations, musical instruments and toys, proving the power of sound as an active tool of transformation.
