Phantoms of Surrealism

The exhibition investigates the fundamental role of women in the Surrealistic movement in the UK

Whitechapel Gallery, 77-82 Whitechapel High St, London E1 7QX, UK

The collective exhibition explores the pivotal role of women as both artists and organisers in the context of British Surrealism in the 1930s. “Phantoms of Surrealism” collects pieces by artists Sheila Legge, Claude Cahun, Ithell Colquhoun, Diana Brinton Lee, and others. The exhibition path sheds new light on the role of women through archive material from the Gallery and loans from the National Galleries of Scotland, West Dean College of Arts and Conservation and Jersey Heritage Trust.
