Whitechapel Gallery is a pioneering arts institution situated in the heart of London’s East End. Housed in a historic building that incorporates the former Whitechapel Public Library, the Gallery offers nine exhibition spaces, a fully equipped auditorium, a range of study and studio spaces, a specialist bookshop and a café.
Over the years, the Gallery has presented exhibitions by some of the world’s most significant and visionary artists, showcasing art from across the globe, including China, Brazil and the Islamic world. It is also committed to supporting local artists and communities, many of whom reflect the rich cultural diversity of Whitechapel and the surrounding area, shaped by generations of migration.
The Gallery’s mission is to make contemporary art accessible and engaging to the widest possible audience through a bold, radical and distinctive programme that places artists and ideas at its heart. It champions under-represented artists and communities, particularly women and people of colour, and presents thought-provoking works that challenge conventions and encourage new perspectives on the defining social and political issues of our time.
