The solo exhibition leads a wider project dedicated to the artist Theaster Gates, including collection displays and new commissions, along with this major solo presentation. The exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery highlights Gates’ transformation of clays as a metaphor for his socially engaged research and artistic practice. “A Clay Sermon” includes ceramic objects, sculptures, installations, film and studio materials from his last twenty years of practice, investigating both the material and spiritual aspects of clay. The research has been developed in collaboration with the V&A Museum.
