A new film work by artist Ulla von Brandenburg, Sweet Feast was commissioned by Whitechapel Gallery in partnership with Le Prix Marcel Duchamp, following her 2016 nomination for the award. The video recreates a real namesake event occurred in 1973, when five hundred children visited Whitechapel Gallery to learn about sweets. On that occasion, a “Sweet Feast”, namely a parade with candies from all over Europe, was organised, to celebrate Britain’s entry into the European Common Market. But the visiting children managed to overwhelm the guard and devour all the candies from the feast. In her video, von Brandenburg explores the dynamics between the individual and the group and the hopes of young people at a time when Brexit may limit opportunities for future generations.
