Power play
The collective exhibition gathers different artistic positions which interrogate power dynamics through different approaches including humour, subversion and provocation. “Power play” draws inspiration from philosopher Jacques Derrida’s “The Politics of Friendship” (1994) which reflects on the notion of friendship to rethink the political, drawing connections between friendship, citizenship and democracy.
The exhibition, occurring simultaneously in two destinations, Delfina Foundation and the Korean Cultural Centre UK (KCCUK) in London, features newly-commissioned works by 10 of Delfina foundation’s former artists-in-residence; besides solo works, on view also some collaborative pieces, all investigating relations between people and the environment, artists and audiences, guests and hosts, individuals and states, and between states themselves. The investigated topics remain consistent with the values promoted by the institutions involved: Delfina Foundation, as an international artist residency based in London; KCCUK, which seeks to promote relations with Korea in the UK through cultural and educational activities; and SongEun ArtSpace in Seoul, which staged the first iteration of the exhibition in late 2018.
