Zeng Fanzhi: In the Studio

In the Studio is a three-part exhibition, held in three different locations, namely Zurich, London and Hong Kong, which offers an in-depth investigation of Zeng Fanzhi‘s practice development over the years. The unifying theme is Zeng’s research into the possibilities of painting in the contemporary era.

Each location spans different years of Zeng Fanzhi’s career and, as a consequence, shows different bodies of works, all never displayed before. In Zurich, the exhibition focuses on abstract landscapes; the Hong Kong one features new paintings and drawings deftly drawn on conjunctions of Oriental and Western artistic traditions. The London one is focused on portraiture from the late 1980s to the present day, showing the evolution in the representation of the human figure, which remains an essential theme throughout Zeng’s career. The figurative works on view in London reveal the aesthetic range of the artist as his approach has evolved.
