Sabino Guisu: Axolotl Creation
Sabino Guisu’s latest series, comprising paintings, textiles, sculptures, installations and large-format ceramics, explores the themes of creation and transformation. At the centre of this body of work is the axolotl, a remarkable salamander native to Mexico, celebrated for its extraordinary ability to regenerate lost body parts and resist ageing. The axolotl is also a creature of myth, inhabiting the luminous realms of Mexican legend as a symbol of perpetual renewal.
Guisu draws on his roots, weaving ancestral Zapotec symbols and the spiral—an upward motif representing growth and evolution—into each piece. The works invite viewers to witness the emergence of something new: a seed of an evolving reality or consciousness, planted deep within Mexican identity. “Axolotl, Creation” marks the final chapter for MAIA and signals its transformation into a new creative form.
