Salah Elmur: The Land of the Sun
Mariane Ibrahim presents “The Land of the Sun” by Salah Elmur in Mexico City.
This marks the artist’s first exhibition with the gallery and in Latin America, showcasing recent paintings that transport viewers to scenes from Elmur’s childhood near the Blue Nile in Khartoum, Sudan. His characters, immersed in vibrant daily life, exude joy yet carry a subtle melancholy, detached from the catastrophes that later afflicted the country.
With his luminous, surreal style, Elmur invites the imagination to explore fertile, impossible landscapes. Though rooted in distant origins, his timeless works unexpectedly resonate with the colours, textures, and themes of Mexican culture.
The exhibition includes a foreword by Morad Montazami, curator and editor specialising in Arab, African, and Asian modernities.
