Liu Xiaodong: Chittagong
As a leading figure amongst the neo realist Chinese painters, the artist’s practice tackles issues regarding contemporary society. His works depict topics such as migrant displacement, environmental crisis, living conditions of the less fortunate and the results of ill-politics and economic disruption. Liu Xiaodong brings back the human being to the centre of the universe and records virtues and pains of our existence.
This spring 2017, Massimo De Carlo brings three exhibitions to Milan to provide an overview of the contemporary painting realm. From the Chinese painter Liu Xiaodong’s depiction of the revenge of human beings against misery (exhibited at the gallery space at Palazzo Belgioioso), to the oneiric creations of Los Angeles based artist Jim Shaw and the worn out and eerie imagery of New York based Jamian Juliano-Villani (both exhibited at the gallery space in via Ventura), the three exhibitions at Massimo De Carlo gallery are a fragmentary yet vital reconnaissance of figuration today.
