Matt Mullican: The Feeling of Things
Pirelli Hangar Bioccca presents “The Feeling of Things”, the first retrospective by Matt Mullican (1951 in Santa Monica, California) in Italy. Since the 1970s the artist has been developing his own modus operandi in order to correspond to altered levels of perception, with its very own own lexicon, he calls it the “five worlds” and they are distinguished apart by five colors: “green for physical, material elements; blue for everyday life (the “world unframed”); yellow where objects become valuable, as in art (the “world framed”); black and white for language and symbols; and red for subjectivity and ideas“.
Occupying almost the entire 3,500 square metre exhibition space the artist has designed a massive sculptural structure based upon his five coloured world. Visitors enter the structure to discover thousands of methodically placed works and objects, including paintings, rubbings, banners, glass sculptures, works on paper, videos, lightboxes, floor pieces and larger installations.
