MJ Torrecampo: Away Back in the Long Ago
C+N Gallery CANEPANERI will open "Away Back in the Long Ago", marking the second solo exhibition in Italy of Filipino-American artist MJ Torrecampo.
The exhibition features new works exploring Filipino mythology, addressing themes like cultural identity, immigrant experiences, and family dynamics.
Torrecampo reinterprets traditional Filipino myths through a modern, visually innovative language, blending her cultural heritage with contemporary sensibilities. Her works, inspired by graphic novels and traditional Filipino art, celebrate ancient folklore through layered narratives and inventive compositions. As noted by Saša Bogojev, “Through layered stories and inventive compositions, Torrecampo breathes new life into supernatural tales, resonating with contemporary concerns.”
Torrecampo’s paintings invite direct engagement with these myths, using a distinctive elevated perspective and non-traditional canvases, breaking away from the rectangular format. This approach allows the narratives to unfold visually and as complex, layered stories that touch on universal themes such as human connections, respect for nature, and the balance between opposing forces. The exhibition will be on view until April 6, 2025, with special hours during Milan Art Week 2025. Visitors are invited to immerse themselves in Torrecampo‘s colorful world where her innovative painting style brings new life to ancient stories, blending the personal with the mythological.
