Sara Enrico: Under the Sun, Beyond the Skin

“Under the Sun, Beyond the Skin” is a solo exhibition by Sara Enrico, curated by Bruna Roccasalva for the seventh edition of the Furla Series, presented in collaboration with GAM – Galleria d’Arte Moderna di Milano. For the first time since the partnership began, the project is developed entirely in the outdoor spaces of the Villa Reale gardens, expanding the dialogue between contemporary art, landscape and public space.

Enrico’s research revolves around materiality and corporeality, exploring notions of transition and hybridisation of languages. Her practice integrates approaches from tailoring, choreography and architecture, combining concrete, pigment, fabric and steel into sculptural configurations that suggest latent vitality. These works articulate fluid relationships between body, clothing and space, situating surface or “skin” as a crucial site of investigation.

The exhibition presents new productions conceived for the gardens, reflecting on the park as a place where nature is shaped by aesthetic, philosophical and social conventions. From this duality between nature and artifice, Enrico creates “a landscape within a landscape”. Her sculptures do not imitate plants but introduce a synthetic vitality, activating tensions between spontaneous growth and deliberate gesture.

The garden becomes a stage where the works engage in unstable equilibrium with their surroundings, generating encounters among artwork, environment and viewer. The project exemplifies the spirit of the Furla Series, launched in 2017 to highlight female contributions to contemporary culture through exhibitions realised with leading Italian institutions.
