Virginia Russolo: A Darkness shining in Brightness which Brightness could not comprehend
The project showcases a series of previously unseen works that explore themes such as the relationship between humans and other species, the intelligence of natural materials, and processes of transformation and ritual practices. The title, a verse from James Joyce’s Ulysses, sets the tone, guiding viewers into a parallel dimension where light and darkness reverse roles, transforming the darkness into a radiant possibility. This concept is embodied in sculptures covered with shimmering silk, symbolizing metamorphosis and vitality. Recurring themes like overflowing water fountains and Grails are presented alongside an innovative plastic intervention that connects the exhibition space. The intervention, resembling an iridescent “lightning bolt,” embodies the force of matter. The paintings, counterpoints to the sculptures, are abstract compositions created using natural substances like wax, resin, propolis, and essential oils. These works are produced through ritualistic, additive processes, engaging multiple senses, including smell, with the unique aroma of the materials. For the exhibition, the artist has created a Special Project of limited, smaller pieces that revisit the Entanglements concept with equal intensity.
