Anselm Kiefer: Voglio vedere le mie montagne – für Giovanni Segantini
On Sunday 12 February 2023, the Lia Rumma Gallery in Naples opens: Voglio vedere le mie montagne - für Giovanni Segantini, the new personal exhibition by Anselm Kiefer, marking the artist's return to the city.
The title of the new series of paintings presented in the exhibition, taken from the words spoken by the artist Giovanni Segantini shortly before his death, also refers to a work by Joseph Beuys, whom Kiefer met during his formative years at the Düsseldorf Academy. Mountain ranges seen as ideal but also threatening places, witnesses to a turbulent nature in constant movement, painted by sensation through layers of colour and mood. For Kiefer, who proceeds like a vate-alchemist in a constant search for new forms to set against the existing, thus attempting to redesign a new world order each time, the creative act is always a process in transformation, an unfinished thing to return to.
In the large canvases exhibited in the gallery space, a powerful and disorienting landscape is depicted. On the pictorial surface, Kiefer makes use of writing as a ‘poetic word’ that moves freely – in this case often recurs and chases itself Voglio vedere le mie montagne – für Giovanni Segantini – above the dark, earthy peaks, struck by twilight or night light.
