Pavlo Makov: Mappa Mundi
The Odessa Fine Art Museum will host a large personal exhibition of Pavlo Makov, one of the most famous Ukrainian contemporary artists, author of the National Pavilion of Ukraine at the Venice Biennale 2022.
The exhibition is based on the large-scale art object “MAPA MUNDI”: a 3D layout that schematically reproduces the outlines of the modern political map of the world. This map is schematic, but the situation of the countries and the real borders between them are reproduced in detail. The only important difference is that in Makov’s geography, the territories are not airtight but connected by a door-hole, which penetrates all the walls-borders. Separated in reality by customs and quarantine, all states become neighbors. And the globe – one multi-room apartment.
The artist tells us about the new world order, which is changing before our eyes intensively and unpredictably. Unrestrained and inevitable globalisation has stopped but human communities have never been so close symbolically as it is today.
