Jeremy Shaw: Phase Shifting Index
The exhibition highlights the multifaceted nature of Shaw's research, combining different sources of inspiration form spiritual beliefs to neuroscience
The first major exhibition in France by the Canadian artist Jeremy Shaw features his new immersive installation “Phase Shifting Index”. The interest in mapping and the functioning mechanisms of the human mind is sided in this exhibition by the one in subcultures, belief systems, and transcendental experience.
On display works such as “Towards Universal Pattern Recognition”, a series of photographic sculptures showing people in moments of spiritual rapture, or the seven-channel video installation showing alleged documentary footage of subcultures of the future engaging in choreographed movements to enter parallel realities.
Every 25 minutes an additional soundtrack plays across the exhibition space, joining the single videos in a unique coordinated choreography: all the subjects on the screens perform the same synchronised dance, turning the video works into a 360-degree immersive art installation for few seconds.
