Stan Douglas: Parallax

Jeu de Paume, 1 Pl. de la Concorde, 75001 Paris, France

The Jeu de Paume presents Parallax, the most significant monographic exhibition devoted to Stan Douglas in France in over thirty years. Since the late 1980s, Douglas has developed an ambitious body of work examining how history is constructed, represented and passed on. Through complex narrative devices, he brings to light the mechanisms by which images shape our perception of reality and reveal the social, political and cultural tensions of each era.

Stan Douglas lives and works in Vancouver. From the outset, his practice has combined film and photography, and he has focused on the processes at work in the construction of reality, treating perception itself as a subject. In his installations, Douglas continues to explore the role of technology in the making of images and the way images shape collective memory. Although rooted in specific historical and cultural contexts, all his work resonates well beyond it, striking a universal chord.

The exhibition's title, Parallax, refers to the apparent displacement of an object depending on the viewer's position. This optical phenomenon illustrates the idea that every gaze is oriented and contingent, arising from a partial perspective. In this sense, Douglas challenges linear and deterministic visions of History, showing that narratives are always under construction and subject to interruption. No image is neutral, and no narrative can be considered complete.

Curated by Gloria Moure and Marta Ponsa, the exhibition is co-produced with the Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA).
