Victor Burgin: That

Victor Burgin, born in 1941 in the UK, is an artist and theorist. He first came to prominence in the late 1960s through his contributions to the first museum shows of “conceptual art”.

Jeu de Paume, 1 place de la Concorde, Jardin des Tuileries, 75008

In formal terms, Burgin’s works explore relations between still and moving images and words, most often in their narrative functions. Although his works are rooted in everyday reality, Burgin’s main and most constant concern is with the psychological space where perceptions of the physical world merge with memory and fantasy.

The exhibition at Jeu de Paume features a selection of works from the 1970s-1980s, when Burgin worked with black and white photography, as well as works from the past two decades, when he starts to work with video. It includes some of his most recent works made with a ‘game engine’ – software originally designed to create video games.
