Oscar Murillo: Spirits and Gestures

Fondazione Memmo in Rome presents the solo exhibition of the artist Oscar Murillo: "Spirits and Gestures"

Fondazione Memmo, Via Fontanella Borghese 56b, Rome

From 10 November 2021 to 20 March 2022, Fondazione Memmo in Rome presents for the first time in Italy the solo exhibition of the artist Oscar Murillo: “Spirits and Gestures”.

In 2019, Oscar Murillo won the Turner Prize and, in the same year, Fondazione Memmo invited the artist to Rome to visit the city and the spaces of the foundation, intending to shape a new body of works destined for a solo exhibition, in direct response to the context. During the pandemic, the artist worked on the corpus at his studio and then repurposed them to create a site-specific installation in the foundation’s spaces.

Oscar Murillo’s works feature dense, multi-layered oil paint strokes, with a massive prevalence of the red color, which is an allusion to expressionism and a reminder of the power of water.

Spirits and Gestures” alludes to several pressing current issues: the restlessness that pervades society, climate change, and environmental disasters, accompanied by broader reflections on the human condition.
