REAL_ITALY

A reading of Italian contemporary art from the perspective of the winning artworks of MiBACT Italian Council's competition announcement

Set in Rome, MAXXI – Museo Nazionale delle Arti del XXI Secolo welcomes the exhibition REAL_ITALY, curated by Eleonora Farina and Matteo Piccioni and running from February 18 to April 26 2020. This project gathers the 13 winning artworks of the first two editions of the competition held by the MiBACT Italian Council General Direction for Contemporary Creativity, which took place in 2017.
The awarded artists are leading exponents of the contemporary Italian art scene: Alterazioni Video, Yuri Ancarani, Giorgio Andreotta Calò, Leone Contini, Danilo Correale, Nicolò Degiorgis, Flavio Favelli, Anna Franceschini, Eva Frapiccini, Alice Gosti, Margherita Moscardini, Luca Trevisani and Patrick Tuttofuoco.
This exhibition aims at promoting emerging Italian artists nationally and internationally, as well as expanding public collections with the works of already renowned artistic figures. These works have in common a deep analysis of current Italy from an artistic perspective that blends the different realities that are emerging in the Italian territory and that depict our country’s past and present, identity and memory, in the hope of plunging the viewers into the most urgently contemporary global issues.
Among the main themes of this exhibition, visitors will find find politically and socially involved subjects – discrimination and social exclusion in urban ghettos and city outskirts, in spaces of detention and refugee camps; hospitality, right to the city and sense of belonging to a self-organised community; dialogue with the recent past and bond with the history, memory and identity of places; not to forget culture of the landscape and artistic heritage.
The artists’ point of view grasps the different nuances of reality and investigates the key points and critical issues of contemporary living. The exhibited artworks emphasise the variety of languages, reflections, sensibilities and aesthetics characterising the art scene in Italy today.
