David Hockney: 82 Portraits and 1 Still-life
Royal Academy of Arts, London and MUVE present at Ca’ Pesaro – International Gallery of Modern Art, the exhibition David Hockney: 82 Portraits and 1 Still-life, a solo show by the famous contemporary English-Californian artist considered a leading exponent of Pop Art in the English-speaking world.
When he moved to Los Angeles in 1964 the artist changes focus, eternalizing American metropolis saturated by Californian blinding light. Hockney’s artistic production has always conferred a pivotal role to the figurative element.
In his chosen genres of portraiture and landscape, the artist combines traditional art techniques and new media.
The eighty-two portraits on display, realized between 2013 and 2016, are considered by the artist as a unique body of works embodying Los Angeles international art world through the faces of renowned gallery owners, critics, curators and artists.
Hockey’s art practice constantly uses identical elements: same size, three days of posing session, a seated figure and two-tone background. This apparently limited standards form a taxonomy of types and characters with different human temperaments transcending classifications of gender, identity or nationality and confirming the greatness of this master of our times.
