Yunchul Kim represents the Republic of Korea at the 59th Venice Biennale. His exhibition “Gyre” interprets the world as a continuous spiral that constantly gyrates and descends in infinite cycles of creation and extinction.

Kim presents a series of interconnected and monumental installations with the aim to explore the “swollen” boundaries of complex political, cultural, social, and existential entanglements, accelerated by the aftermath of the pandemic, human-machine dilemmas and ecological disasters.  The exhibition is Kim‘s analysis of the world in the era of the Anthropocene.

Kim’s installations are nameless objects and materials powered by the invisible matter from outer space, such as a flare-like whirl of fluids of “The Dust of Suns” (2022), seawater travelling through spiral-shaped microtubes of “Impulse” (2018), and the giant knots of “Chroma V” (2022).
