g. olmo stuppia: Marrying the Night Episode V

The Italian Cultural Institute hosts a free screening of “Marrying the Night – Episode V” on Thursday, October 24, 2024, from 11:00 AM to 3:30 PM at 686 Park Avenue, New York, NY 10065.

The event, curated by Carmen Lorenzetti, Luca Berta, and Francesca Giubilei, includes a film screening followed by talks featuring Simone Sibilio (Ca’ Foscari University), Ferdinando Trapani (University of Palermo), Nicola Capone (University of Naples Federico II), Arianna Marcolin, Malina Mannarino, g. olmo stuppia, and others. This non-profit event is organized by Ass. R Arte e Poesia delle Isole and Marcovaldo Paris.

In “Marrying the Night Ep. V”, the journey of two orphan girls and a boy unfolds as they leave Italy’s oil ports in the Gulf of Marghera, setting sail for the Americas in pursuit of lost dreams and a desire to “do”. The film traces the symbolic umbilical cord that connects the Italian landscape, filled with a longing for freedom, nature, and travel, with the promise of an American future.

As the 20th century ends and the world becomes fragmented, a sail woven from love postcards, emigrants’ memories, and labor contracts is set on fire before the Statue of Liberty—a symbol of democracy, sculpted by Auguste Bartholdi and inspired by Camillo Pacetti’s La Giustizia Nuova at Milan Cathedral. The sailboat’s prow cleaves the waters again, igniting the flame of the Renaissance, shattering only to rebuild. This eternal return of charity, freedom, and nomadic bodies creates new alliances and languages in a filmic architecture that vibrates with life.

Earlier episodes of “Marrying the Night” were produced by the Venice Biennale, inviting audiences to become filmmakers by exploring marginal areas, breathing new life into abandoned palaces and churches, and collecting abandoned Murano glass. Today, the sail swells once more as New York City emerges as a lucid dream amid the ruins of time. The film celebrates the deep friendship between Italy and the United States, symbolizing the eternal struggles of language: burning to be reborn, sculpting to create new “air”.
