Leading US conceptualist artist Lawrence Weiner dies aged 79

December 2, 2021

The great US conceptual artist Lawrence Weiner has died, aged 79 in his home and studio in Manhattan, New York.

Famous for his text-based installations, presented in bold capital letters together with simple graphics and fragments of sentences, he was a firm believer in the thought that the idea alone could create an artwork. His text pieces have been displayed on many unusual sites and surfaces, often on a monumental scale and in prestigious exhibitions such as four editions of documenta and four editions of the Venice Biennale.

Weiner also produced a number of experimental films and videos.
