The Chinese painter, has been stranded with his family in New York City under lockdown since the middle of February, unable to travel back to his home in Beijing. From a small New York apartment, the artist has made a series of watercolour paintings documenting the changing landscape of the city over the past four months, from the poignant scenes of Spring in New York earlier this year, under the grip of the pandemic, to the unrest and crowds of the Black Lives Matter movement.

In the style of a contemporary history painter, Liu Xiaodong has shed light upon radical shifts in society for decades, commenting on shifting sands and social change through his work.

The new body of work serves as a record of this landmark moment in history, the artist also kept a written diary alongside the visual chronicle of his experiences.

The exhibition is on view until July 11th  and the diary can be read here.
