Mark Bradford inaugurates the new venue of Hauser & Wirth in Menorca
Opening July 19, 2021, Hauser & Wirth Menorca is an art centre on the beautiful natural setting of Illa del Rei, an island in Mahon harbour. A destination to experience art in connection with education, nature and conservation, the centre’s exhibition programme spans ambitious new commissions by gallery artists across all media. Following a conservation project, Hauser & Wirth sensitively repurposed the existing 18th century outbuildings of a naval hospital to create the 1,500 sq.m. art centre.
Hauser & Wirth Menorca comprises an exhibition space with eight galleries and an outdoor sculpture trail featuring works by Louise Bourgeois, Eduardo Chillida, Joan Miró and Franz West.
For his first exhibition in Spain, the artist presents an installation of globe sculptures, two site-specific wall paintings, and a suite of new canvases that continue his career-long exploration of the systems that oppress marginalised populations. Integral to the exhibition is an Education Lab built during a residency with students from the Escola d’Art de Menorca that highlights the global immigration crisis.
