Oscar Murillo Closing Party & Runway Show in Venice
Oscar Murillo will close his monumental show ‘A Storm Is Blowing From Paradise’ in Venice with a fashion runway showcasing 100 wearable sculptures produced for his creative platform Arepas y Tamales, alongside pieces commissioned from fashion students in Venice and beyond. The event will feature a new installation created by the artist, performance, sound, and an afterparty with live music from Pongo and DJ sets by Manuka Honey and Massimo Santi.
‘A Storm Is Blowing From Paradise,’ has occupied the historic Scuola Grande della Misericordia in Venice since September, bringing together paintings, installation work, sound and digital interventions, with an interactive presentation of Frequencies, his long-term collaborative project with school students across the world.
To mark the closing of the exhibition, Murillo will stage a runway featuring 100 wearables from Arepas y Tamales, a new strand of his practice engaging with music, food, fashion, youth culture and the digital world. This will be the first time the pieces have been presented in a runway show. The artist has also invited fashion students, from local universities in Venice and from around the world, in an open-call commission to create garments and accessories to be featured on the catwalk. Murillo has created a new installation environment for the runway to take place, and the evening will include his performance work “Industrial Park” and the diffusion of his sound piece “Storm From Paradise“.
The afterparty will feature live music from Pongo, fusing Angolan Kuduro with influences from Afrobeat, Brazilian funk, Dancehall and EDM. Multi-disciplinary artist and DJ Manuka Honey will be bringing her unique blend of Latinx-infused club music to Venice, with support from Massimo Santi, a DJ and selector emerging from the Italian underground scene, whose style varies between House and Disco, with strong soulful influences.
