Fernanda Fragateiro
Born in Montijo, Portugal, in 1962, Fernanda Fragateiro’s work activates relationships with space, immersing viewers in performative situations. Her interventions in unexpected locations—such as a monastery, an orphanage, or derelict houses—along with subtle landscape alterations and the use of materials including fabrics sourced from German factories, used books, or rubble from Portugal’s construction boom, reveal narratives buried within processes of transformation.
The Portuguese artist draws on art history, architecture, feminism and politics, yet maintains a distinctly recognisable style characterised by a minimalist approach to form, colour and texture. Fragateiro works within the three-dimensional field, focusing primarily on sculpture and installation. The ways in which she intervenes in space demonstrate her sustained interest in rethinking modernism.
She currently lives and works in Lisbon, Portugal.
