Amar Kanwar was born in 1964 in New Delhi, where he lives and works as an artist and filmmaker. His artistic products explore the politics of power, violence and justice and are characterized by a unique poetic approach to the personal, social and political. He has been awarded Prince Claus Award (2017); Leonore Annenberg Prize for Art and Social Change (2014); an Honorary Doctorate in Fine Arts, Maine College of Art (2006); the Edvard Munch Award for Contemporary Art, Norway (2005); and the MacArthur Fellowship in India (2000). He has held numerous exhibitions internationally at the Ishara Art Foundation, Dubai, jointly with NYU Abu Dhabi Art Gallery, United Arab Emirates, Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid, Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, New Delhi, LUMA foundation, Arles, Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Minnesota, Tate Modern, London, Bildmuseet, Umea, Sweden, Goethe Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan, Mumbai, and the Assam State Museum in collaboration with Kiran Nadar Museum of Art and North East Network, Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, Whitechapel Art Gallery, London, Renaissance Society, Chicago.
