Ana Navas
Born in Quinto in 1984, Ana Navas process through her work the metaphor of a never-ending domino effect in which objects and contents are constantly pushing one another.
Navas seeks to distance herself from the idea of a zero point of creation, while questioning strong terms associated with art-making such as revolution, authorship and creativity. For her, art is a dialogue with strangers, yet this dialogue not only aims to resonate with the direct participants of the artistic experience but also creates a wider echo.
One of the main questions in her practice is how art is perceived and transformed outside its original context, and what the points of encounter are between different disciplines such as ethnology, art, design, decoration, and the relationship between high culture and popular culture. She is particularly interested in the moments when encounter, transformation, absorption and imitation become especially present. In her work, a wide variety of subjects—adolescence, forgery, amateur art, song covers or costumes—emerge as examples surrounding an idea of readiness for copying and possession.
Navas develops several series in parallel, which later become connected in an installation-situation that unfolds the conceptual relationships between them. In order to remain coherent with her focus on transformation, she understands the exhibition situation as a rehearsal rather than a definitive moment. This means that her works are conceived as modules that can be reused as new pieces, reappear in different constellations, shift from showcased work into something else, or take on a different meaning each time they are presented.
