Shanghai Gallery of Art – SGA
Established in 2004, SGA is primarily focused on Asian Contemporary Art
Established in 2004 at Three on the Bund, Shanghai Gallery of Art (SGA) is one of China’s most distinguished galleries. Known for its quality programming and curatorial acumen, SGA is primarily focused on Asian Contemporary Art. Located at the Bund, Shanghai’s most prominent historic district, the gallery’s distinctive activities showcase a range of discourses relevant to contemporary art and cultural practice through its exhibitions, artists’ projects and inter disciplinary programs. Located on the third floor of the iconic and much awarded historic building, designed by celebrated architect, Michael Graves, SGA dedicates an expansive 1,200 square meters, with its gracious high ceilings and abundant natural light, to its exhibition space, collection facilities, VIP room, and gallery store.
Through the gallery’s longstanding reputation, ties with major museums, art foundations, curators and critics, SGA exposes its represented artists to broader audiences, thus fostering a greater understanding of their artistic strategies and the context in which their ideas arise. For collectors and institutions, Shanghai Gallery of Art is an important resource for both consultancy and acquisitions. The gallery offers long term strategic planning for private collectors and institutions on both established and emerging artists.
Whether it is identifying new dynamics between art and the public realm, maintaining novel strategies based on contemporary art production and dissemination, or exploring uncharted framework and territory by engaging with artists, SGA is avital part of Shanghai’s cultural community and a catalyst for new experiences.
Since SGA first opened in 2004, it has hosted many significant exhibitions featuring some of today’s most important Chinese and international artists. The works of Zhou Chunya, Liu Wei, Zhang Xiaogang, Wang Guangyi, Ye Yongqing, Fang Lijun and Zhang Peili have all graced the walls and floors of SGA.
We have also produced several museum quality, critically acclaimed, installation projects like Xu Bing’s Tobacco Project, one of the first solo exhibitions the artist held in mainland China after his residence abroad; and Gu Dexin’s most ambitious projects to date, 2007.4.14.; LiuJianhua’s controversial Export-CargoTransit brought much deserved critical attention to this Shanghai based artist; and Thing’s Right(s) 09, The Moreby Wu Shanzhuan and Inga Svala Thorsdottir as well as The Spirit Scenes from Time Past by Yue Minjun both helped to reinforce these artists’ high caliber and stature. Additionally, we have hosted exhibitions by some of the world’s top architects, designers and artists like MVRDV, Kengo Kuma, and Anish Kapoor. SGA has always believed in supporting artists to maintain an independent vision, and to make their visions a reality.
