Museion

Museion, the museum of modern and contemporary art in Bolzano, operates as an international research laboratory and as a commissioner of artworks, many of which are produced directly on site. Its aim is to be interdisciplinary: not only figurative art, but also architecture, music, performance, film and theatre all have a place in its annual programme.

Museion exhibits, preserves and communicates modern and contemporary art using an innovative, interdisciplinary approach. Its exhibition spaces host shows, talks, presentations and artistic projects that address some of the most pressing issues of today.

At the heart of the museum is its collection, the most important archive of modern and contemporary art in South Tyrol. Since 1985, Museion has been building its collection of modern and contemporary artworks, which now comprises 4,500 high-quality pieces by renowned international artists.

Museion regularly exhibits works from its collection, organising thematic exhibitions to ensure that as many pieces as possible are available for public viewing. In addition, temporary exhibitions by prominent local, national and international artists are held on a regular basis.

Museion’s exhibition programme generally revolves around three guiding themes: research into the aesthetics of contemporary sculpture, significant positions of women in art, and socio-politically engaged artistic practice.
