The museum was founded by Dr. Alvar Carrillo Gil and his wife, Carmen Tejero de Carrillo Gil, to house and exhibit the collection they began assembling in 1938 over more than three decades. During this time, they played a crucial role in the study and promotion of Mexican art, presenting their collection in various international exhibitions before solidifying their vision of creating a dedicated space to preserve, display, and make it accessible to the public.
Dr. Carrillo Gil entrusted Fernando Gamboa with designing the museum’s exhibition layout and architects Augusto H. Álvarez and Enrique Carral Icaza with the architectural project. Initiated in 1958, the design was centred around a system of ramps to allow continuous visitor circulation, complemented by a central skylight for natural lighting. The iconic interior ramps, integral to the original design, have represented the museum’s identity as part of the MACG logo since 1998.
