GAM Milano

Villa Belgiojoso, which has housed the Gallery of Modern Art since 1921, is one of the masterpieces of Neoclassicism in Milan. Following the bombing that destroyed the PAC in 1993, the Villa underwent an extensive restoration, which was completed in 2006. Returned to Milan in all its original splendour, Villa Reale is now a luxurious setting for a newly reimagined exhibition journey.

Villa Belgiojoso, which has housed the Gallery of Modern Art since 1921, is one of the masterpieces of Neoclassicism in Milan. It was built between 1790 and 1796 as the residence of Count Lodovico Barbiano di Belgiojoso and was designed with elegance and functionality by the Austrian architect Leopoldo Pollack, a collaborator of the foremost figure of Lombard Neoclassicism, Giuseppe Piermarini, to whom the building was originally commissioned.
It was only after it was transferred to the municipal state in 1920 that the significant transformation of the historic building began, ultimately turning it into the space that now houses the modern art collections on display.
