Derek Tumala: Eyes Melted Gold Natunaw na ginto ang mga mata
The exhibition is a nonlinear exploration of colonial and capitalist legacies. The title echoes “The Golden Apples of the Sun” (1953), a collection of short stories by Ray Bradbury about a spaceship attempting to harvest a piece of the Sun. The sculpture and video installation at Der Tank unfolds through hallucinations, double vision, psychedelia, superstition, delusion, paranoia, and delirium. Heat is metaphorically the main character, and heatstroke emerges as a symbol and trigger for altered perceptions and hallucinations.
“Init sa Magdamag” (“Forever Burning”) (2025) is a video serving as a visual motif suggesting eternal or destructive heat, while “Animal Apocalypse” (2025) is a brass sculpture representing surreal or post-natural representations of animals, hinting at ecological collapse.
