Uma Coleção Particular – Arte Contemporânea no Acervo da Pinacoteca
As part of the celebratory activities for its 110th anniversary, Pinacoteca presents a panorama of Brazilian contemporary art through its own collection. Uma Coleção Particular – Arte Contemporânea no Acervo da Pinacoteca [A Private Collection – Contemporary Art in Pinacoteca’s Collection] comprises more than 60 works, most of them recent recently added to the museum and exhibited for the first time, like the pieces received from the Collection Roger Wright, lent in commodatum to Pinacoteca this year.
The exhibition includes paintings, sculptures, videos, photographs, drawings, prints and installations created between 1980 until recently by artists born or based in the country. For Pinacoteca’s curator José Augusto Ribeiro, “the chronological cut considers the reorganization process of Brazilian political and cultural life after the end of the military dictatorship (1964-1985), but it also takes in account a period of re-articulation of Pinacoteca itself, that comprehends, for instance, the renovation of its headquarters, from 1994 to 1998”.
The exhibition fully occupies the first floor of the museum – it’s 12 exhibition rooms, the Octagon space and the looby –, with historical pieces like “Ping-ping”, by Waltercio Caldas (b. 1946, Rio de Janeiro), other than works by Iberê Camargo (1914, Restinga Seca – 1994, Porto Alegre), Gilvan Samico (1968, Recife – 2013, idem), Regina Silveira (b. 1939, Porto Alegre), Tunga (b. 1952, Palmares), Leda Catunda (b. 1961, São Paulo), Beatriz Milhazes (b. 1960, Rio de Janeiro), and others. Works by established artists of international relevance are exhibited along pieces by new or mid-career artists, from different regions of Brazil.
