Tobias Rehberger: In the Future On/Off
On 28 September 2024, Associazione Arte Continua inaugurated Tobias Rehberger’s new exhibition, “In the Future On/Off” within the UMoCA – Under Museum of Contemporary Art. The installation features 52 coloured crystal lamps suspended across UMoCA’s three arches and forms part of the “Cities of the Future” project, organised by Associazione Arte Continua. This work recalls Rehberger’s “Montevideo” installation from 1999, created for the fourth edition of Arte all’Arte. Handmade by Collevilca glassworks in Colle di Val d’Elsa, the lamps honour local craftsmanship while exploring temporality and transience, bridging past and present. Control of the lights is given to the artist’s three children via an app, symbolising the transfer of legacy across generations. Visitors are encouraged to engage with the handcrafted lamps as they turn on and off, offering a poetic reflection on personal and collective dimensions.
