Inserzioni: Guglielmo Castelli, Lydia Ourahmane, Oscar Murillo

Castello di Rivoli, Piazza Mafalda di Savoia, Rivoli

As part of its 40th anniversary programme, Castello di Rivoli launches “Inserzioni” (“Insertions”), a new format that commissions contemporary artists to create works conceived specifically for the museum. The inaugural edition features new projects by Guglielmo Castelli (Turin, 1987), Lydia Ourahmane (Saïda, 1992), and Oscar Murillo (Valle del Cauca, 1986). On this occasion, the museum also presents the winning work of the “2025 Collective Prize”, “Culture Lost and Learned by Heart: Butterfly” (2021) by Adji Dieye (Milan, 1991), together with recently acquired works: “Mare con gabbiano” (1967) by Piero Gilardi (Turin, 1942–2023) and “a.C.” (2017) by Roberto Cuoghi (Modena, 1973).

“Inserzioni” introduces new commissions directly into the fabric of the collection. Each invited artist intervenes in a room of the museum, responding to its Baroque architecture, its exhibition history, and the works currently on display. The format, lasting six months and renewed twice a year, transforms galleries traditionally dedicated to the permanent collection into an evolving collective exhibition. Instead of presenting new voices in separate dedicated spaces, the project places them at the centre of the institutional narrative, opening the collection to movements, cultures, and geographies that have been underrepresented.

The project recalls the principle of “Ouverture”, the first exhibition curated by Rudi Fuchs in 1984, where artists and their stories occupied the foreground. Here too, each commission is created in dialogue with one of the Castello’s stately rooms, as if to collaborate with them across historical time. This approach reflects values that resonate strongly today: inclusivity, openness to other perspectives, and active cultural participation.

One of the peculiarities of Castello di Rivoli is its status as an unfinished building since the eighteenth century. This incompleteness turns the museum into a “container” that artists can complete—literally or metaphorically—through their interventions. Over the years, this dialogue has generated memorable installations, where the rooms and the artworks mutually amplify one another.

“Inserzioni” opens to the public on Friday 26 September 2025 and runs until February 2026. The project is supported by the Radical Commissioning Group, a cohort of benefactors who, together with the museum, believe in granting artists carte blanche to produce visionary new works while expanding the institution’s voice.
