AMA VENEZIA inaugurates its new space with a groundbreaking exhibition that explores the dynamic tension between mechanical reproduction and gestural painting. Drawing exclusively from the AMA Collection, the exhibition features an eclectic range of contemporary artists who challenge the traditional notions of mark-making.
The works on display embrace the intersection of digital and analogue techniques, with artists like Avery Singer, who blends 3D modelling software with airbrushed paint, and Wade Guyton, whose digital inkjet prints defy the boundaries between technology and craftsmanship. Refik Anadol takes the fusion of art and data even further, using AI to create chromatic abstractions based on vast datasets, while Jacqueline Humphries incorporates digital symbols like ASCII and emoji into her abstract patterns, questioning the nature of communication in the digital age.
Meanwhile, artists such as Salman Toor and Elizabeth Peyton maintain a more traditional, yet still contemporary, approach by exploring the emotional depth and vibrancy of personal and intimate scenes through hand-painted imagery. David Hammons and Lauren Halsey present works that, while not traditional paintings, engage with the painterly process—Hammons through the action of repetitive motion on graphite, and Halsey by creating complex, layered wall reliefs that draw upon urban iconography.
Sculpture also plays a significant role in this inaugural exhibition, with Jeff Koons’ hyperrealistic bronze inflatable of the Incredible Hulk and Jordan Wolfson’s unsettling animatronic sculpture of a dancing woman—both embodying the friction between illusion and reality. Together, these works create a multifaceted dialogue between tradition and innovation, analog and digital, figuration and abstraction.
This inaugural exhibition embodies AMA VENEZIA’s mission to push artistic boundaries and create a platform where contemporary art and its evolving forms can thrive. Visitors will experience a space where creativity, experimentation, and technological exploration converge in an exciting display of artistic achievement.
