TBA21–Academy presents the 3rd exhibition belonging to the biennial cycle “The Soul Expanding Ocean” curated by Chus Martínez and hosted by Ocean Space.
The third encounter takes place in parallel with the 59th Venice Biennale and features the South African artist Dineo Seshee Bopape, who explores post-colonialist narrations connected to the Ocean. The exhibition is born from the artist’s experience in a research residence at the Jamaican “Alligator Head Foundation” centred on the relationship between art, science and communities. The artist expresses herself through different media, including video, sounds and clay.
The artist tries to communicate the history of slavery submerged by the Ocean, imagining the Ocean as a living organism that keeps the memory of all the slaves drowned. The ocean preserves their bodies and their stories, becoming itself a caring, living body. This image led the artist through a series of hundreds of drawings that narrate a post-colonial history of what happened between land and sea.
