For the 59th Venice Biennale, China Pavilion presents the exhibition “Meta-Scape“, which is inspired by the “jing”. In the traditional Chinese cultural system “Jing” is a world that evolves and increases in meaning with the time. From the earliest meaning of realm and boundary, it gradually extended to spiritual perception that humans can achieve. “Jing” also appears in China’s modernization process: the combination of machine and spiritual intention can be connected to the interpretation of “realm” in Chinese cultural tradition. The famous scientist Qian Xuesen translates “virtual reality” into “spiritual realm”, and understands the “virtuality” in it as a Chinese-style perception own way.
The “Metaverse” presented in this exhibition creates and presents a cosmic consciousness of symbiosis, completely different from the popular concept of “Metaverse”. It is intended as a cosmic consciousness of symbiosis, that transcends the boundaries of reality and re-establish a universal way to reflect on the self and the common future of mankind constructed from it.
The exhibition is divided into two areas: the garden and the exhibition hall. The garden area hosts the sculpture “Snowman” (2021) by Wang Yuyang, while the exhibition area hosts the joint collective project “The Jungle” (2021) by the CAFA Institute of Science and Technology and the Brain and Intelligence Laboratory of Tsinghua University, “Xu Lei. Xinghui” (2021) by Liu Jiayu, “Quiet and Quiet” by Liu Jiayu (2021), and “Wang Yuyang#: One Quarter (Solar Terms)” (2021) by Wang Yuyang.
