Diplomazija Astuta

Arsenale, Arsenale, Castello, 30122, Venice, Italy

Title: Diplomazija astuta
Commissioner: Arts Council Malta
Curators: Keith Sciberras, Jeffrey Uslip
Exhibitors: Arcangelo Sassolino, Giuseppe Schembri Bonaci, Brian Schembri

The Maltese Pavilion, curated by an international team led by Keith Sciberras (Malta) and Jerey Uslip (US), features a collaboration between artists Arcangelo Sassolino (Italy), Giuseppe Schembri Bonaci (Malta) and composer Brian Schembri (Malta), who will re-articulate Caravaggio’s seminal altarpiece “The Beheading of St John the Baptist” as an immersive, kinetic, sculptural installation.

Through their signature artistic vocabularies, the artists will bridge this biblical narrative with contemporary culture, transposing the zeitgeist of the Oratory of the Decollato in Valletta, Malta (the site of Caravaggio’s groundbreaking canvas since the 17th century) onto the Malta Pavilion.

Diplomazija astuta” subsequently re-situates Caravaggio’s immanent themes within modern life, addressing many of the global challenges we face in today’s world, from inequality to justice and peace.
