Brazilian Art is presented among the earlier works with masterpieces by Portinari, Di Cavalcanti, Anita Malfatti and Almeida Júnior. The sculpture collection begins with a work from the 4th century BC, a greek sculpture of the goddess Higeia, and also comprises 73 sculptures of Degas. Also, the museum has pieces signed by Rodin, Ernesto de Fiori and Victor Brecheret. The MASP has a large collection of prints, photographs, drawings, archeological objects, maiolica ware, furniture, holstery, clothing, design objects and kitsch objects, among others.
Founded on October 2, 1947, the MASP was created by Assis Chateaubriand, a businessman and journalist, and Pietro Maria Bardi, an Italian journalist and art critic. The museum had a very important didactical role, creating pioneering courses in the country. The current MASP‘s building at Paulista Avenue, was designed by architect Lina Bo Bardi. The construction took 12 years and had to follow a condition imposed by the donor of the land to the city of Sao Paulo: the view from downtown should be preserved. In order to respect that condition, four columns were designed to support the building, creating the “Vão Livre” (a large empty walk way underneath it).
MASP receives temporary exhibitions from all over the world, and it also offers to the public exhibitions of its collections throughout the year. So visitors have always an opportunity for direct contact with the masterpieces of the collection, every time they visit the museum. MASP‘s Education Department offers, since the museum’s foundation, thematic visits about current exhibitions, guided group tours, art workshops and support to teachers throughout the year.
