Built in the Brutalist style as part of the Southbank Centre, a cultural hub on the River Thames with roots in the 1951 Festival of Britain, the Hayward Gallery is one of the U.K.’s most important temporary exhibition spaces for contemporary art. Opened in 1968, it has no permanent collection. Its programme focuses largely on international contemporary art, presented through solo exhibitions as well as thematic group shows, often combining the unorthodox with the accessible. The Hayward also produces a strong programme of touring exhibitions for venues across the U.K. Every five years, it presents the British Art Show, a major survey of the latest developments in contemporary art.
