TRIO Bienal: Transversalidades das Identidades Tropicais

Museu Histórico Nacional, Praça Marechal Âncora, s/n, Centro

Transversalidades das Identidades Tropicais [Transversals of Tropical Identities], part of the TRIO Bienal, presents a view of the three-dimensional production whose research finds, as formal results, colour overflows and materials that bind its identities to some tropical latitude. Such poetics can be found in artists from around the world and reverberate aesthetic ideals close to the major movements in the production of Brazilian art, such as Tropicália, the Pops Vanguards, the culture of Carnaval, The Baroque, the popular culture and other emotional-aesthetic ballast connections.

With works by 160 artists from 44 countries, the first edition of TRIO – Rio Three-Dimensional Biennial is curated by Marcus Lontra and happens in nine art spaces in the city. All exhibited pieces approach the three-dimensional (sculpture, installation, object) and its expanded fields, such as paintings, photography, performance and video. This year’s Bienal is titled after a song by rapper Marcelo D2, “Quem foi que disse que não existe amanhã?” [Who said tomorrow doesn’t exist?], a reference to art’s utopian aspect that survives even in moments of crisis and uncertainty.
